WordPress State of the Word 2022: Key Insights and Future Directions

Gutenberg is set to transform web development beyond WordPress, as revealed in the 2022 State of the Word. Stay tuned for its expanding influence.

Gutenberg is poised to transform the web, with WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg predicting it will extend far beyond its initial scope. This was one of the major revelations at the 2022 State of the Word, where Mullenweg outlined the future trajectory of WordPress and its ecosystem.

The annual State of the Word event, held on December 15, delivered insights into how the web’s future is block-based, with Gutenberg at the forefront. Mullenweg emphasized that Gutenberg’s role could surpass WordPress itself, citing its adoption in applications like EngineAwesome and its integration into platforms such as Tumblr. The message was clear: expect to see Gutenberg’s familiar interface in more applications as it becomes a standard for both web and mobile interfaces.

Gutenberg’s Expanding Influence

Gutenberg’s evolution is set to continue with the project entering a new development phase. The Gutenberg initiative, which started in 2018, aims to revolutionize content creation and management through a series of strategic phases. The initial phase focused on easier editing, followed by customization which brought features like block patterns and full site editing.

As WordPress gears up for its 6.2 release in March, the project will transition into Phase 3, focusing on collaboration. This phase will enhance team content creation and authoring capabilities. The final phase will introduce multilingual support, further solidifying Gutenberg’s position as a comprehensive tool for global content management.

WordPress Community Rebounding with In-Person Events

The return of in-person events was a highlight of 2022, marking a significant rebound for the WordPress community. WordCamp events proliferated, with 22 events in the past year and 34 already planned for 2023. This resurgence is vital for community engagement and innovation, providing a platform for contributors, team leads, and enthusiasts to collaborate and share ideas.

Additionally, the WordPress Community Summit is set to return after six years, offering a venue for discussing the future challenges and opportunities within the WordPress ecosystem. This renewed focus on face-to-face interaction signals a robust recovery from the pandemic’s constraints on physical gatherings.

What To Do

  • Developers: Prepare for Phase 3 of Gutenberg by familiarizing yourself with new collaboration features coming post-WordPress 6.2.
  • Agencies: Consider integrating Gutenberg into client workflows as its adoption grows beyond WordPress, enhancing project flexibility.
  • Site Operators: Leverage the return of WordPress events to network and stay informed on ecosystem developments.
