WordPress Developer Documentation Revived After Two-Year Hiatus

WordPress has finally updated its developer documentation after a lengthy two-year gap. The documentation site now reflects changes up to WordPress 6.9.1, addressing significant content gaps and fixing long-standing bugs.

The documentation at WordPress had not been updated since the release of WordPress 6.4. This left developers without official references for new interfaces, classes, methods, and functions introduced in subsequent versions. The situation was exacerbated by a bug causing offset source snippets for many symbols.

Efforts to restore the documentation involved numerous contributors, including @dd32, @dmsnell, @johnbillion, @jonsurrell, and @tmdk, who tackled the parsing challenges. The updates were made public through the dedication of @dd32 and @coffee2code, supported by the #docs team.

The root cause of the documentation delay stemmed from several new syntax introductions in WordPress code, which the existing documentation generator could not parse. Key changes included:

code documentation update
Technical updates to WordPress documentation process.
  • August 1, 2023: A change to replace array_key_exists() with isset() blocked the process.
  • April 15, 2024: Introduction of type annotations for optional types caused recognition issues.
  • June 3, 2024: Shorthand syntax for callables required Reflection library updates.
  • August 27, 2025: Anonymous classes led to crashes due to name extraction failures.

Efforts to address these issues included updating the nikic/php-parser dependency and modifying the adapter layer to accommodate new syntax.

The restoration of the developer documentation is a significant step for the WordPress ecosystem. Developers now have access to accurate and up-to-date resources, which is crucial for maintaining and developing WordPress plugins and themes. The ongoing effort to improve the documentation process could signal a more responsive update cycle in the future, aligning documentation with code changes more swiftly.

While the documentation update is a positive development, challenges remain. The upcoming WordPress 7.0 release still lacks documentation generation capabilities. However, ongoing work to upgrade the PHP parser and Reflection library aims to address these gaps, potentially allowing for quicker updates and fewer disruptions in the future.

Action Steps

  • Developers: Review the updated documentation for changes since WordPress 6.4. Report any discrepancies or missing information.
  • Site Owners: Ensure any custom code aligns with the latest documented features to prevent compatibility issues.
  • Agencies: Educate team members on the updated documentation to enhance development practices.
  • Hosting Teams: Monitor developments for WordPress 7.0 to prepare for potential documentation updates.
